Our history

In 2008, Madrid was experiencing a gastronomic awakening. The city was beginning to fill with interesting options, but there was still no place that combined fast food, informality, and high quality. That’s when Magasand was born, a pioneer in the concept of healthy, quality fast food.

We chose the Salesas neighborhood to open our first restaurant: a central and beautiful location with a lot of potential, but one that still lacked healthy options, both fast and slow. From the beginning, we have actively collaborated in the revitalization of the neighborhood, even participating in the creation of the Salesas Merchants Association.

Luckily, a unique space became available: a former 19th-century garage with double-height ceilings and a semi-demolished mezzanine that, despite its condition, won us over. We decided to take the plunge. But halfway through the renovation, we discovered that the building was subject to two different urban planning regulations, one for each street it faced, which prevented us from obtaining a restaurant license.

The only viable option was to open a grocery store with fresh products prepared on the premises and a small tasting bar. But that meant giving up the charming loft. So we decided to turn the problem into an opportunity.

Thus, a brilliant idea was born: to combine our passion for magazines with gastronomy. We started selling unique and hard-to-find magazines, some to take away and others to enjoy in the shop, accompanied by a coffee, a sandwich, or a salad. All this around a four-meter-long shared table, an old slaughterhouse table, with Danish stools and flexo lamps.

This fusion gave rise to the name Magasand: Magazine + Sandwich, referring to “le magazin” in French and “Magatzin” in German. Our original slogan said it all: Amazing sandwiches, impossible magazines.

A few months after opening, the real estate crisis hit. Times were tough, but our offering—high quality at affordable prices with an efficient model—allowed us to keep going. Magasand needed fewer staff than a traditional restaurant, and our value for money stood out.

In less than two years, the whole neighborhood was talking about us. There were lines at the door, so we decided to open a second location, this time next to the Retiro Park, on Columela Street.

The growth continued. We were receiving more and more orders from offices, events, and catering, so we decided to open a space dedicated exclusively to that part of the business. We found the perfect place: an old tobacco warehouse in the Delicias area, with impressive six-meter-high windows. That’s how Magasand Delicias was born.

But this story isn’t over yet. Magasand continues to grow, evolve, and write new chapters.
